The Ultimate Yarn Weight Guide — From Lace to Super Chunky
Share
Yarn weight is one of the most important things to understand when starting a project. Use the wrong weight and your beanie becomes a bucket hat. Here's everything you need to know.
Yarn Weight Categories
0 — Lace
Delicate and fine. Used for lace shawls and lightweight accessories. Needle size: 1.5–2.5mm. Think cobweb-thin.
1 — Fingering / Sock
The go-to for socks, lightweight shawls, and baby garments. Needle size: 2.25–3.25mm. Our Summer Lace Shawl uses this weight.
2 — Sport
Slightly thicker than fingering. Great for lightweight garments and baby items. Needle size: 3.25–3.75mm.
3 — DK (Double Knitting)
The most versatile weight — works for almost anything. Garments, accessories, blankets, amigurumi. Needle size: 3.75–4.5mm. Our Yarn House Fittings range is DK weight.
4 — Worsted / Aran
A step up from DK. Warm, substantial fabric. Perfect for sweaters, hats, and mittens. Needle size: 4.5–5.5mm. Great for our Oversized Cardigan.
5 — Chunky / Bulky
Knits up fast with visible stitches. Blankets, cowls, and chunky accessories. Needle size: 5.5–8mm.
6 — Super Chunky / Super Bulky
The fastest yarn to work with. Giant blankets and statement scarves. Needle size: 8–12mm+. Perfect for our Chunky Cable Throw.
How to Check Yarn Weight
Look at the ball band (label). It shows:
- Weight category (number 0-7)
- Recommended needle/hook size
- Gauge (stitches per 10cm)
- Yardage/meterage
Can You Substitute Yarn Weights?
Going up or down one weight category usually works if you adjust your needle size — but always knit a gauge swatch first. Going two weights in either direction will significantly change the finished size and drape.
